FTC Disclosure: I’m the founder of Geothority, which I’ll be talking about in this article. As always, I’m giving you my honest opinion and how I use it myself.
I’m Will Buckley, author of “The 4 Minute Workday,” and I’m obsessed with efficiency. That’s why I built Geothority, the local SEO tool that automates 90% of the work for getting your business ranked on Google Maps. You know, so you can spend less than 4 minutes a day on it!
Look, in 2017, I was dead broke, living in my mom’s basement, and trying to figure out how to get my insurance agency off the ground. Cold calling? Door knocking? Forget about it. I needed a way to attract clients without wasting time. That’s when I dove deep into local SEO, specifically Google Maps. It completely changed my business. And that’s what led to writing my book, “The 4 Minute Workday,” when I realized I had built the tools using a 4-minute workday.
Today, I want to share the exact strategy I use, what I call the “Local Trust Stack,” to dominate Google Maps in 2024. It’s about building trust with Google, and it’s broken down into 5 key layers:
- NAP/GBP Optimization
- Trust Pages
- Geo Content
- Reviews
- AI Optimization
Layer 1: NAP/GBP Optimization
This is the foundation. NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number. Your GBP is your Google Business Profile. In 2024, this is arguably the most important as Google changed how it interprets accuracy. I have been seeing Google punish profiles with less accurate data.
NAP consistency is KEY. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are exactly the same across every online directory, citation, and your website. Even minor variations can hurt your ranking. For example, is your address “123 Main St” or “123 Main Street”? Pick one and stick with it everywhere.
GBP Optimization is critical. Your Google Business Profile is like your digital storefront. Claim it, verify it, and fill out every single section completely. Choose the right categories (be specific!), add high-quality photos, write a compelling business description highlighting your unique selling points, and regularly post updates.
With Geothority, we scan all your existing profiles, find and correct inconsistencies with ONE CLICK, and even help generate optimized GBP descriptions using AI. It’s about making sure Google sees you as a legitimate, trustworthy business.
Layer 2: Trust Pages
These are the pages on your website that build credibility and tell Google (and potential customers) that you’re a real, established business that provides real value in your local community. I had to learn that websites with more “trust” would also lead to higher rankings.
Here are the must-have Trust Pages:
- About Us: Tell your story. Who are you? What’s your mission? Why should people trust you?
- Services: Describe your services in detail. Be specific about what you offer and how it benefits your customers.
- Contact Us: Make it easy for people to reach you. Include your phone number, email address, physical address, and a contact form.
- Testimonials: Showcase positive reviews from satisfied customers. Social proof is powerful.
- Privacy Policy/Terms of Service: Demonstrate that you’re a professional, legitimate business that respects user privacy.
Pro Tip: Embed your Google Maps on your Contact Us page. This further reinforces your physical location with Google.
I built a system into Geothority that analyzes your website and identifies missing Trust Pages. It even provides templates and AI-powered content suggestions to help you create them quickly and easily.
Layer 3: Geo Content
This is where you create content that’s specifically targeted to your local area. The goal is to show Google that you’re an expert in your community and that you understand the needs of local customers. I have seen local SEO efforts go from non-existent to top positions in under 6 weeks just by focusing on geo content. Yes, even in super competitive categories!
Here are some ideas:
- Blog Posts: Write about local events, news, or community issues. Example: “Top 5 Family-Friendly Activities in [Your City]”
- City Pages: Create dedicated pages for each city or neighborhood you serve. Highlight unique aspects of each area and tailor your services to their specific needs.
- Case Studies: Feature local clients and showcase how you’ve helped them solve problems in your area.
- Videos: Create videos about your local community, your business, or helpful tips for local residents.
Make sure to include relevant keywords related to your location throughout your content. Mentions of local landmarks, neighborhoods, and community organizations are a bonus.
With Geothority, you can research the most popular local keywords and generate AI-powered content outlines specifically designed for geo-targeted blog posts and city pages. It’s like having a personal content marketing team working for you.
Layer 4: Reviews
Reviews are the lifeblood of local SEO. Positive reviews build trust, improve your ranking, and drive more customers to your business. I find that if you have a good customer experience just asking for the review will get you 4-5 stars.
Here’s how to get more reviews:
- Ask: The simplest way to get reviews is to ask your customers. Don’t be shy!
- Make it Easy: Provide customers with a direct link to your Google Business Profile review page.
- Automate: Use email marketing or SMS to automate the review request process after a customer completes a transaction.
- Respond: Respond to all reviews, both positive and negative. Thank positive reviewers and address concerns from negative reviewers professionally and promptly.
Pro Tip: Encourage customers to include specific keywords related to your services and location in their reviews. For example, “Great insurance agent in downtown Austin!”
Geothority includes a built-in review management system that allows you to easily send review requests, track your review performance, and respond to reviews from a single dashboard.
Layer 5: AI Optimization
AI is changing the game in local SEO. From generating optimized content to automating tasks, AI can help you save time and improve your results. I actually see it replacing the need for marketing agencies for small businesses.
Here are some ways to use AI for local SEO:
- Content Generation: Use AI to generate blog posts, city pages, and GBP descriptions.
- Keyword Research: Use AI to identify the most relevant keywords for your local business.
- Image Optimization: Use AI to optimize your images for search engines.
- Task Automation: Use AI to automate repetitive tasks like review requests and social media posting.
Geothority is built from the ground up with AI at its core. We use AI to automate every aspect of the Local Trust Stack, from NAP consistency to content creation to review management. It’s like having an army of AI assistants working to get your business ranked on Google Maps.
The Local Trust Stack is the proven strategy I use to rank businesses on Google Maps. It’s not a magic bullet, but it’s a systematic approach that works. By focusing on building trust with Google, you can outrank your competitors and attract more customers to your business.
Look, just try the free scan. Takes 60 seconds and you’ll immediately see why your competitors are outranking you.
